Penguins Add Green to the Gold and Black

To the delight of most Pennsylvanians, with the possible exception of those from Philadelphia, the Pittsburgh Penguins are back in action and ready to defend their Stanley Cup title. The championship banner was raised to the rafters last week at Mellon Arena, know locally as The Igloo. This is the final season the Penguins will play at the 48 year old building, currently the oldest in the league. Next season Sidney and boys will cross the street to the new 18,000 seat, state-of-the-art Consol Energy Center.

The Penguins are working to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification at the new rink – a first for the National Hockey League. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system which provides third-party verification that a building was designed with the goal of improved energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reductions, improved indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources. Gold Certification is the second highest rating available – meaning that the building has largely been awarded top performance marks in each category.

"This sends the message to residents and Penguins fans across the nation that we are the black, gold and green City" said Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

The Consol Energy Center is slated for completion by mid-2010.
